The government has announced August 5 as 'July Uprising Day' and August 8 as 'New Bangladesh Day,' July 16 as ‘Martyr Abu Sayeed Day’ commemorating key events in the country's recent history.
The Cabinet Division issued separate circulars on Wednesday confirming the decision, reports UNB.
August 8 marks the day when the interim government was formed following the overthrow of the previous government amid a mass uprising by students and the public.
Besides, the government declared July 16 as Martyr Abu Sayeed Day, in remembrance of the student who was killed in police firing in Rangpur during the mass movement.
The July Mass Uprising Day has been included in the Cabinet Division's "Ka or A" category of national and international days, while the other two fall under the "Kha or B" category.
The categories determine the level of formality and resources allocated to each observance. "Ka" covers days of major national significance, often marked by extensive ceremonies, official participation, and possible government holidays. "Kha" includes other important days such as National Social Services Day and International Anti-Corruption Day, but these do not necessarily carry a public holiday.
Meanwhile, a 36-member national committee was formed to oversee the observance of mass uprising days in July and August, marking the anniversary of 2024 student-led movement.
Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus will serve as the chairperson of the committee.
The 36-day long programme will be celebrated from July 1 to August 5 to mark the anniversary of the July Uprising.
