Former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal was arrested today by members of the Detective Branch (DB) of police from the Moghbazar area of Dhaka. His arrest is the latest in a series of legal actions targeting former election officials.
Talebur Rahman, deputy commissioner (media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, confirmed the development, stating, “He was arrested by DB personnel from Moghbazar. Further details will be disclosed later.”
The arrest follows a recent case filed by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on June 22, accusing 24 individuals — including three former CECs, 10 election commissioners, and several senior government and police officials — of irregularities, misconduct, and partisanship during the national elections held in 2014, 2018, and 2024.
Just days ago, on June 22, another former CEC, KM Nurul Huda, who presided over the 2018 elections, was also arrested after being assaulted by a mob at his residence in Uttara.
The BNP's case alleges systemic manipulation in the electoral process, claiming that these officials played key roles in undermining democratic practices over three consecutive general elections.
