Awami League has become inactive and failed to stage a showdown marking its founding anniversary on Monday, thanks to the stricter measures of the members of different law enforcement agencies, reports Daily Sun.
Home Adviser Lt Gen (Retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury made the remarks while talking to reporters after emerging from a meeting on the law and order situation held at his ministry office in Dhaka on Tuesday.
“Yesterday was the anniversary of the Awami League’s founding. However, they couldn’t manage a large gathering. The Awami League is gradually becoming inactive,” said Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.
When asked about the possible timing of the upcoming election, the Home Affairs Adviser said, “We are working on preparations at the grassroots level. But the Election Commission will decide the exact date. Our responsibility is only to maintain law and order.”
Regarding ensuring a fair environment for the upcoming election, the Adviser said, “The heads of the law enforcement agencies have pledged that this time the election will be free and fair.”
