Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali said actions will be taken against the police members concerned if they fail to prevent incidents like mob justice or mob lynching in the capital.
He said this in response to a question from reporters after the award distribution ceremony of the ‘Road Safety Poster and Slogan Competition’ in the capital on Tuesday afternoon.
The DMP commissioner said, “One person has been arrested in connection with the public anger surrounding former CEC Nurul Huda in Uttara. We have also filed a case. We never approve of mob justice. We have filed cases of kidnapping and robbery in many cases before. Even some officers have been suspended and punished due to police negligence.”
He also said, “The incidents of mob justice are much less now compared to three or four months ago. We are not tolerating any unwanted incidents like raiding a house or breaking a door to catch an accused at night. Due to this, the situation is now very much under control. No one should take the law into their own hands. If we want to catch a criminal, we have to inform the police, and police will take action.”
The DMP Commissioner said, “We take action whenever we receive a complaint of extortion. A case has been registered in such an incident at Adabor Police Station and one person has been arrested.
At the event, the DMP Commissioner handed over the prizes to the ten students who won the ‘Road Safety Poster and Slogan Competition’.
At that time, DMP Additional Police Commissioner (Traffic) Md. Sarwar and JICA officials were present.
