Former Member of Parliament Golam Mawla Rony has sharply criticized those who, despite having no political experience, are now offering opinions on how elections should be conducted. “People who have never even gone to a polling station are now trying to teach us how to vote,” Rony said during a recent television talk show. “Those who’ve never done politics are lecturing those of us who have dedicated 35 to 40 years of our lives to it.”
Rony emphasized that he, like many others, has spent decades in politics and has given away the majority of what he has earned to serve the public. “I’ve given 80 to 90 percent of what I’ve earned to the people. Some have given even more,” he said. “Now, those with no political background are standing in front of seasoned politicians and acting like instructors.”
On the topic of electoral reform, Rony was dismissive. “There’s no real reform happening—only a waste of time, money, and energy,” he stated. He pointed out the chaos within political parties themselves, saying, “Parties struggle to even form upazila committees properly. There are broom processions in committee halls. And now we’re expected to believe all parties can be brought to consensus? That’s nonsense.”
According to Rony, the current developments have little to do with actual reform or credible elections. “Whatever is going on now—whoever comes to power in the future—none of them will accept it. Everything depends on who holds the majority in Parliament. This isn't about democracy. There’s something invisible behind it all.”
Mocking the influence of emerging political actors, he added, “It’s as if NCP and Jamaat have become so powerful that even influential figures are desperate to ally with them. Some are even begging for their mercy.”
