The Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) has suspended Dr. Mamun Al Mahtab Swapnil’s medical certificate for five years following allegations of medical negligence that led to patient deaths.
The suspension was announced on Sunday after investigations into two separate incidents at Labaid Hospital in Dhaka. Dr. Swapnil was overseeing endoscopy procedures for two patients, Engineer Afsar Ahmed and Rahib Reza, both of whom tragically died following their treatments.
Engineer Afsar Ahmed, an LGED engineer from Chhatak Upazila, died on November 9, 2023, during an endoscopy. His brother filed a complaint accusing Dr. Swapnil and the hospital of medical negligence.
In another case, Rahib Reza, a former student of Jahangirnagar University, died in February 2024 under Dr. Swapnil’s care during a similar procedure. The Department of Health’s investigation into the incident also held Dr. Swapnil and Labaid Hospital accountable.
In addition to Dr. Swapnil, the BMDC also suspended the medical licenses of 13 other doctors for periods ranging from six months to four years due to similar concerns of negligence.
