Chief adviser's press wing on Sunday debunked the rumour of Hindu minor girl Jhumur Sharma's abduction, terming it a deliberate campaign against Bangladesh.
"Recently, several social media accounts-particularly those linked to Hindutva-driven disinformation networks - have spread a false claim that a Bangladeshi Hindu minor girl, Jhumur Sharma, was abducted by radicals in Bangladesh," the press wing said in a statement posted on its verified Facebook page - CA Press Wing Facts.
According to the statement, the claim gained traction after Radharamn Das (@RadharamnDas), vice president and spokesperson for ISKON Kolkata, posted about it, alleging a rise in the abduction of Hindu girls and even married women across Bangladesh.
Radharamn further claimed that families live in constant fear, with daughters disappearing without a trace. In many instances, he alleged that these abductions led to forced conversions and marriages.
Radharamn also called for urgent protection of Hindus in Bangladesh and urged the global community to raise their voices in protest.
Additionally, BJP leader Gargi Mukherjee (@gargiMu48960835) falsely claimed that Jhumur Sharma was abducted for forced conversion, accusing the Bangladeshi police of deliberately failing to search for the girl, the press wing said.
It said she also suggested that Hindu girls are being brutally tortured under the immoral Yunus government.
"However, these claims are entirely false. Jhumur Sharma was not abducted. In fact, she is over 20 years old, and the incident of her going missing dates back to January 2025. She was found at that time," the statement read.
When contacted, one of her relatives dismissed the rumours of Jhumur's abduction, stating that she was not abducted by radical Islamists or anyone else.
However, he requested to remain anonymous and did not provide further details, according to the press wing.
"The coordinated repetition of these narratives across multiple social media accounts indicates a deliberate campaign to discredit Bangladesh, reflecting a broader anti-Bangladesh agenda," the statement said.
