The Bangladesh Army has taken a firm stance against mob violence and public unrest, aiming to maintain nationwide stability.
Speaking at a press conference at Dhaka Cantonment on Thursday, Colonel Shafiqul Islam, Colonel Staff of the Directorate of Military Operations, confirmed that decisive actions had been taken against instigators. “The army has taken stern actions against those creating mob violence. As a result, such incidents have significantly declined,” he said.
Referring to recent violence in Rangpur, Colonel Islam noted that army personnel reached the scene promptly and brought the situation under control.
On the upcoming general elections, he stated that while no official directive has been received, the army is prepared to carry out its duties as needed during the polls.
Regarding push-ins from India, Colonel Islam said the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and the Coast Guard are handling the situation effectively. “There is currently no need for army involvement in this matter,” he explained.
He also highlighted the efforts of army personnel during Eid-ul-Azha, noting that both male and female officers played a key role in ensuring a safer travel experience. According to the army, accident-related deaths and injuries decreased by 30%–40% during the holiday period.
Over the past three weeks, army-led operations resulted in the arrest of 996 individuals for various crimes. They recovered 56 firearms, 990 rounds of ammunition, and detained 452 suspected drug traffickers.
