Despite the government launching a handful of programs for street children in the country, nearly 94% of them are not receiving any form of government assistance.
Furthermore, 58% of children growing up on the streets do not have birth certificates, which deprives them of their right to education and access to various services.
These findings were revealed yesterday at a media consultation meeting organized by Caritas Bangladesh at the Dhaka Reporters Unity.
The survey was conducted among 667 street children in Dhaka, Mymensingh, and Rajshahi, as well as 1,246 families living in slum areas.
Among the children surveyed, 51.6% are currently not attending school or madrasa.
Only 5.7% of the children are included in government social safety net programs.
The remaining 94.3% of street children remain excluded from the government's social safety net.
