BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khashru Mahmud Chowdhury has said that his party wants a swift national election to take the country to the right path of democratic governance, reports the Daily Sun.
He alleged that the countrymen were deprived of voting rights for the last 20 years and that the new generation cannot be part of the election at the same time due to the autocratic role of the defeated Awami League.
The restoration of a healthy democracy through an inclusive national election was the main spirit of the July mass upsurge, Khashru claimed.
However, it is well known that the students across the country went on a movement demanding reform of the quota system in the public services that eventually led to the mass upsurge in July last year.
While talking to journalists, the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Monday noon, Khashru said that there is no way to give back democratic, political and constitutional rights to the people without holding a national election.
Khashru went to London to take part in a meeting held between Chief Adviser Prof Mohammad Yunus and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on 13 June.
