Several high-ranking leaders of the fascist Awami League party – including former ministers, lawmakers and central committee members, who sought refuge in India after their government’s ouster on 5 August 2024 – are now under threat of militant attacks, said sources.
In this regard, Indian security agencies have alerted top AL leaders and suggested them to move carefully and remain vigilant in India.
Several sources at the AL and the Indian security agencies confirmed the matter to the Daily Sun.
Sources said AL leaders, especially those who were powerful and influential during the Awami regime in Bangladesh and now staying in various states of India, are at risk of terror attack by miscreants.
According to Indian intelligence, terrorists from neighbouring countries are very active in the Indian border area and they are trying to enter India by crossing the border.
India has made its border security stricter, especially alongside the Pakistan and Bangladesh border areas, after the Pahalgam terror attack in Kashmir on 22 April this year.
Sources also said that Indian security agencies alerted AL leaders about the local Indian Muslim community, especially the Bihari Muslim community living in Kolkata and other areas.
They said that Bihari Muslims in India are also historically harbouring a hostile attitude to the Awami League.
This fact was confirmed by the statement of an Awami League leader who lives in Kolkata of India.
While talking to the Daily Sun on condition of anonymity, the AL leader said, “Kolkata’s local Muslims especially the Biharis are very unfriendly and aggressive towards Awami League and its people. We understand their attitudes during the Friday prayer.”
Meanwhile, AL Organizing Secretary and former lawmaker Shafiul Alam Chowdhury Nadel told the Daily Sun, “Indian law enforcement agencies and other security agencies are always keeping contacts with us. They warned that disguised militants from Bangladesh may attack high-profile Awami League leaders, including former ministers and lawmakers who have taken shelter in India.”
Nadel said, “They repeatedly advise us to be extremely careful.”
“Since then, we have also become cautious and have also warned our leaders and activists,” he added.
The Indian government has arranged for Sheikh Hasina, ousted Bangladeshi prime minister and AL president, to stay in India since she fled to India on 5 August last year.
For the first two or four days, Hasina and her sister Sheikh Rehana were kept in the terminal building of the Hindon Air Base in Ghaziabad, on the outskirts of Delhi, India, which is controlled and operated by the country's Air Force.
But after it became clear that Sheikh Hasina could not be moved to a third country quickly, the Indian government moved her from Hindon to a secret address in Delhi. The Indian government has not released any information in this regard and arranged high security for her.
