Four individuals accused in the killing of Begum Rokeya University student Abu Sayeed during the July Uprising in Rangpur have been produced before the International Crimes Tribunal in a case concerning crimes against humanity.
On Sunday morning (June 15), former Sub-Inspector Amir Hossain, Constable Sujon Chandra Roy, the university’s Proctor Shariful Islam, and Chhatra League leader Imran Chowdhury Akash were brought to the tribunal in a prison van.
A hearing on their case is scheduled to be held before the tribunal, presided over by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, Chairman of the International Crimes Tribunal.
On April 9, the tribunal ordered the four accused to be produced in connection with the murder of Abu Sayeed during the July Mass Uprising in Rangpur. It also directed the authorities to submit the investigation report by June 15. The order was issued by the same bench led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder.
Abu Sayeed was shot dead by police during an anti-discrimination student movement in Rangpur.
According to the prosecution, former SI Amir Hossain and Constable Sujon Chandra Roy were directly involved in the killing. The university’s Proctor Shariful Islam, along with Chhatra League activist Emran Chowdhury Akash and others, allegedly instigated the attack.
As the accused were already in custody in connection with other cases, the prosecution has applied to show them as arrested in this case as well.
