Two people, including a traffic police officer and a bus helper, were killed and at least 25 others injured in a series of collisions involving six vehicles on the Dhaka-Khulna highway in Gopalganj early Sunday.
The victims were identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector Rafiquzzman of Bhatiapara Highway Police Station and Selim Hossain Bepari, a bus helper from Khulna’s Sonadanga area, reports UNB.
The injured, whose identities remain unknown, were admitted to the Gopalganj 250-bed General Hospital.
According to Gopalganj Sadar Police Station OC Mir Md Sajedur Rahman, the accident occurred around 4am in the Gopinath area. A Khulna-bound Baleshwar Paribahan bus from Dhaka’s Jatrabari slammed into a parked truck. Shortly after, three more buses, including one from Arman Paribahan, and a microbus crashed into the damaged vehicle, triggering further destruction and injuries.
Both the traffic officer and the bus helper died at the scene. Traffic on the highway resumed about two hours later after the debris was removed.
