BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman proposed that the national parliamentary election be held before the upcoming Ramadan.
He made the proposal during a meeting with Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus on Friday.
In response, the Chief Adviser said that if necessary reforms could be completed, it might be possible to hold the election in the week before the start of Ramadan.
The meeting began at the Dorchester Hotel in London at 2:00 pm (BST) on Friday and continued till 3:35 pm.
Following the hour-and-a-half-long meeting, National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman briefed the media.
BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and the Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam, among others, were present during the briefing.
In a joint statement released by the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing, it was mentioned that BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman proposed to the Chief Adviser that the election be arranged before next year’s Ramadan. Party Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia also believes that it would be ideal to hold the election around that time.
The Chief Adviser reaffirmed that he has announced plans to hold the election in the first half of April next year. If all preparations are completed, the election could be held in the week before the start of Ramadan in 2026. However, he emphasized that significant progress must be made in terms of reform and justice before then.
Tarique Rahman welcomed the Chief Adviser’s stance and expressed his gratitude on behalf of the party.
The Chief Adviser also thanked Tarique Rahman for the fruitful talks.
