Jamaat-e-Islami has declared recently released leader ATM Azharul Islam as its party candidate for the upcoming national elections. Jamaat has declared him as its candidate for Rangpur-2 (Badarganj-Taraganj) constituency.
The party's central assistant secretary Abdul Halim announced his candidacy from a rally in Taraganj of Rangpur on Thursday.
At a program in Taraganj, former acting secretary general of Jamaat-e-Islami ATM Azharul Islam said, "Those who said that so-and-so's daughter does not flee the country have fled now. Their root is elsewhere, they flee there even at the silly causes. It is not possible to benefit the country and the people of the country with those whose address is elsewhere."
ATM Azhar said this at Jamaat-e-Islami's Shukrana rally and Eid reunion program in Taraganj of Rangpur at 11:30 am on Thursday. He is seeking votes as a parliamentarian candidate to serve the people of Rangpur-2 (Badarganj-Taraganj).
He said, “In the past years, not only Jamaat-e-Islami was affected by the Awami League's oppression, but all those who went against the views were affected. Jamaat-e-Islami leaders did not flee the country despite embracing death. Those who carried out oppression and torture fled themselves.”
ATM Azhar said, “I want the government to inform them that those who were involved in this murder in any way should be brought under the law and punished. Otherwise, Bangladesh will not have the rule of law. Today, people have started trusting the courts. Earlier, the courts were run in a partisan manner. Now the courts are free from partisanship. My verdict was given only when the execution is left. But by the grace of Allah, I was freed. And where are the judges who tried to hang me as a convict? There’s no trace of them right now.”
Stating that he was not involved in crimes against humanity in 1971, he said, "Today I am free and independent. I want to tell you that I was not involved in the crime for which I have been sentenced to death. I swear to Allah, that I was not involved in the slightest in that crime. I was treated unfairly."
