This year's Eid-ul-Azha saw approximately 9.1 million cattle sacrificed across the country, according to figures released by the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock. Interestingly, a significant number, 3,310,603 animals, remained unsold.
The overall numbers were a tad lower than last year that saw 10.409 million animals sacrificed. Between 2018 and 2020, roughly 10.211 million animals, including cows, buffaloes, goats, and sheep, were sacrificed annually on an average.
To be precise, a total of 9,136,734 cattle were sacrificed this Eid, including 4,705,106 cows and buffaloes, 4,430,668 goats or sheep, and 960 other animals, according to the Department of Livestock Services (DLS) – a government body under the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock.
Breaking down where all these sacrifices took place, it was Rajshahi Division that led the pack, with a staggering 2,324,971 animals. Dhaka Division wasn't far behind with 2,185,040. Chattogram saw 1,753,732, while Khulna had 804,224, Barishal 400,783, and Rangpur 964,999. On the flip side, Sylhet Division recorded the fewest sacrifices at 319,823, with Mymensingh Division not far behind with 383,162 animals.
The DLS is actually responsible for pulling all these statistics together, and they mentioned they estimated this year's figures by taking samples from various types of villages in each region.
The DLS noted that the 3,310,603 unsold animals were largely due to increased livestock production. They anticipate these animals will find homes in upcoming ceremonies and events.
