The Chief Adviser’s Office has given verbal approval for a meeting between Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman and the interim government head at the State Guesthouse Jamuna in Dhaka at 6pm today (Saturday).
The Jamaat chief applied for the meeting with Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus to discuss the country’s rapidly deteriorating political scenario, said the party’s Nayeb-e-Amir Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher.
On Friday morning, news broke out that the chief adviser is considering resigning from his post amid growing political pressure on him to fulfil “certain interests.”
In an emergency meeting, Prof Yunus told NCP Convener Nahid Islam that he cannot perform properly under such pressure, the NCP leader told reporters on Friday.
Along with several other political parties, Jamaat-e-Islami has already clarified they do not want to see Prof Yunus resign abruptly. Rather, they want Prof Yunus to oversee the next general elections as the government head.
Earlier on Friday, Jamaat had urged Prof Yunus to convene an all-party dialogue to address the ongoing political crisis.
The crisis erupted in the form of days of street blockades enforced by BNP activists across major parts of the capital, demanding BNP leader Ishraque Hossain be appointed as the mayor of Dhaka South. Even when a High Court (HC) writ challenging the appointment was pending, BNP activists kept demonstrating, paralyzing parts of the capital.
At one point, Ishraque and his supporters began demanding the resignation of two de facto ministers in the government to ensure its credibility. On Thursday, they paused their protests for two days to review the government's actions, just hours after the High Court ruled in Ishraque's favour, clearing his path to the mayorship.
