The High Court on Thursday adjourned until Monday the hearing of an appeal filed by BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman’s wife, Dr Zubaida Rahman, challenging her three-year jail sentence handed down by the relevant lower court in a graft case.
A High Court division bench comprising Justice Md Khasruzzaman passed the order after partially hearing the appeal on Thursday, reports BSS.
Earlier, on May 14, the court granted bail to Dr Zubaida Rahman after she filed the appeal against her conviction and prison sentence. The court granted her bail until the appeal is disposed of and also stayed the fine imposed on her by the lower court.
Additionally, the High Court called for all relevant documents of the case from the concerned lower court.
Senior Advocate SM Shahjahan, Barrister Kaiser Kamal, and Advocate Zakir Hossain Bhuiyan appeared for Dr Zubaida Rahman, while Senior Advocate Asif Hassan represented the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
On May 13, the High Court condoned a delay of 578 days in Dr Zubaida Rahman’s filing of the appeal against her conviction and sentence.
The ACC filed the case with the city’s Kafrul Police Station against three individuals, including Tarique Rahman and Zubaida Rahman, for amassing illegal wealth and concealing information about their properties.
On August 2, 2023, Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Asaduzzaman sentenced Tarique Rahman to nine years and Zubaida Rahman to three years in prison in the case.
However, on September 22, 2024, the Ministry of Home Affairs suspended Dr Zubaida Rahman’s sentence for one year.
