BNP leader Ishraque Hossain has temporarily suspended the ongoing movement, giving the interim government a 48-hour ultimatum for observation.
He made the announcement while talking to the party men at the Kakrail intersection in Dhaka this afternoon.
Earlier, Ishraque’s supporters had demonstrated continuously for eight days, demanding that he be allowed to take charge as Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation.
The High Court on Thursday dismissed a writ petition that sought a directive against administering the oath of office to BNP leader Ishraque Hossain as mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), clearing the way for his swearing-in.
Following the court’s decision, Ishraque had earlier posted on Facebook, urging protesters to remain on the streets until the student advisers resigned. However, later in the afternoon, he arrived at Kakrail and announced a suspension of the protest, giving a 48-hour ultimatum to the interim government.
