A group of students from Dhaka University (DU) Institute of Education and Research besieged Shahbagh police station over the murder of Chatradol leader Shahriar Alam Shammo.
On Friday, the protesters gathered in front of the university's Institute of Education and Research.
Later, at 11:30 am, they gathered at Raju Sculpture under the banner of 'Bangladesh General Student Society'. Then, they took out a procession from here and surrounded Shahbagh police station.
They have surrounded Shahbagh police station till the time of writing the report. Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies have taken up positions at the gate of Shahbagh police station.
During the procession, the students raised slogans on several issues including the trial of Shahriar Alam Shammo murder and ensuring the security of the university.
They demanded immediate arrest of all the accused involved in Shammo murder, fair trial and a safe campus.
After the siege, a delegation went inside the police station for discussions. In this group, teachers from the Institute of Education and Research Dr. Muhammad Abdus Salam, Dr. Asim Das, Dr. Sirajul Islam were present. There are also four representatives from the students.
Ibrahim Munshi, a student of the 27th batch of the Institute of Education and Research, said that this is a non-partisan banner. Various political parties have started politics over the death of Shammo Bhai. Their main demand is the resignation of various people. But our main demand is the trial of Shammo’s murder.
He said that even after 72 hours have passed since Shammo’s murder, the accused who stabbed him has not been arrested. We have not come here to attack anyone; we have not come here to demand anyone's resignation. We have come with the demand for the arrest and trial of the main accused.”
Ibrahim Munshi warned that if the remaining perpetrators are not arrested within 48 hours, a program will be launched to surround Shahbagh police station again.
Shammo’s classmate Toufiq-ul Islam said, “The main accused in Shammo’s murder has not been arrested yet, and we do not see any attempt to arrest him. Those who have been arrested by the police are involved, but they are not the main accused. Thay will have to answer to them why the remaining accuseds are not being arrested.”
If no arrests are made within the next 48 hours, this non-violent movement will take a different form, Taufiq warned.
