BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas said, “The independence and the sovereignty of the country are not safe under this (interim) government.”
He alleged that people around the government are looting the country's economy and they are behind everything from bank looting, bribery, and money laundering.
He said this at the inauguration of the BNP's membership renewal and membership collection program at the Comilla District Shilpakala Academy on Thursday.
Mirza Abbas said, "Tk 90,000 crore has been laundered in the last eight months. Now the country is under the control of the launderers. The fathers and uncles of many advisors have started businesses. There have also been allegations of taking bribes, too. But, there’s no discussion over it anywhere.”
Questioning the freedom of the media, Mirza Abbas said, "Nothing can be said against this government in any media. No newspaper is allowed to write. There is no freedom of the media. I cannot tell many more incidents out of shame."
Addressing the government, Mirza Abbas said, "We have fallen from the mouth of a dog and entered into the mouth of a tiger. Someone like the ‘Old Man of Sindabad’ has occupied our shoulders and does not want to come down. Now our responsibility is to get it off our shoulders.”
He said, “I don't want begging, I want to get the dues of the account. The people's right to vote, a fair right and we all have to realize it.'
Commenting that the government does not have the authority to decide on the 'humanitarian corridor' with Myanmar, Mirza Abbas said, “Such decisions cannot be taken without an elected government. We have to be careful about the corridor decision. BNP will take a stand against it as these decisions can bring in terrible consequences.'
BNP Chairperson's Advisory Council member Amin Ur Rashid Yasin, South District BNP convener and former MP Zakaria Taher Suman, Comilla Divisional organizing secretary principal Md. Selim Bhuiyan, joint organizing secretary Md. Mostaq Mia, central leader Advocate Dr. Khandaker Maruf Hossain and others were present at the event.
