A Dhaka court today (May 5) granted a four-day remand for former Member of Parliament of Cox’s Bazar-1 Jafor Alam in connection with the murder case of Jubo Dal leader Shamim during the BNP’s grand rally on October 28, 2023.
Judge of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court, Partha Bhadra, passed the order as police sought a seven-day remand.
However, no defense lawyer appeared on behalf of the accused.
Earlier, on April 28, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Sefatullah ordered Jafor Alam to be sent to jail. On April 27, Jafor Alam was arrested by Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) Police from the Dhanmondi area of the capital.
According to the case documents, the incident took place on October 28, 2023, when BNP called a grand rally in the capital. On the same day, the Awami League also held a counter-rally aiming to foil the BNP's program.
Later, clashes broke out in Naya Paltan, where Awami League activists attacked the BNP's rally where Jubo Dal leader Shamim was killed on the spot. The case was filed with the Paltan Police Station on September 24, 2024.
Following the fall of the Awami League regime, at least 15–16 cases, including murder charges, have been filed against Jafor Alam in Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Chakaria, and Pekua.
