Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) saw no classes on Sunday, despite reopening after a two-and-a-half-month hiatus, as teachers continued their boycott in protest of unresolved issues stemming from the February 18 unrest, reports UNB.
Md Abdullah Elias Akhtar, Director of Students’ Welfare at KUET, confirmed that no academic activities took place due to the ongoing strike. “The teachers’ association is firm in their decision to boycott. The Vice-Chancellor is holding a meeting with the teachers today to resolve the situation,” he said.
Md Faruk Hossain, General Secretary of the KUET Teachers’ Association, clarified that the boycott would continue until justice was served for the February 18 attack, which targeted the Vice-Chancellor and several faculty members. "We will not return to classes until those responsible are held accountable," he added.
The unrest began after the assault on students, leading to widespread protests and demands for the resignation of the Vice-Chancellor, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, and Director of Students’ Welfare. Following these protests, which included a hunger strike, the Ministry of Education removed the Vice-Chancellor and Pro-Vice-Chancellor. On May 1, Prof. Dr. Md Hazrat Ali of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (Cuet) was appointed as the acting Vice-Chancellor. He officially assumed office on May 3.
Despite the new appointment, students expressed frustration with the continued suspension of classes and exams. The situation remains unresolved as both faculty and students await solutions to the ongoing crisis.
