BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has said that canal excavation is a cornerstone of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party's (BNP) political agenda, highlighting its significance in urban development and local empowerment.
During a speech on Friday morning at the inauguration of canal excavation and cleaning work in Chattogram, Khasru outlined the broader vision behind such initiatives. Speaking as the chief guest at the event, which took place near Nazir Canal and Kalir Chha Canal by the Kattoli ward office, Khasru explained that canal excavation was not simply about draining water. Rather, he said, the goal is to ensure the consistent flow of water throughout the city, creating an environment conducive to both ecological balance and economic development.
Khasru elaborated on how a revitalized canal system could contribute to the local economy, with the potential to turn these water bodies into spaces for recreation, tourism, and community gathering. "A thriving city is one where residents can engage in cultural, recreational, and economic activities by the canal. These spaces could serve as places of entertainment, and walkways could be created for citizens to enjoy," he remarked.
He emphasized that the effort to excavate and clean the canals was just the beginning of a long-term plan that would benefit not only the local community but also the agricultural sector by providing improved irrigation through clean, well-maintained water systems.
The BNP leader applauded the local initiative, noting the significance of community-driven projects in Chattogram. “This work, led by the voluntary efforts of Uttar Kattoli Ward BNP, is a shining example of how local initiatives can drive change. The initiative to excavate two canals from one ward is a remarkable step. But the goal should be to replicate this model across every ward in the city,” he added. Khasru further stressed that BNP’s politics is not limited to slogans; it is about tangible development that improves the lives of the people. "This is the politics of Shaheed Zia—politics of development, progress, and production. We are not just talking about change; we are actively building it."
Khasru concluded by emphasizing the need for national progress. "The movement struggle is over. Now, it's time to build the country. BNP was created for this purpose. We must bring forward all the formulas necessary for the development of our nation."
Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain, a leader with a history of street struggles, also praised the local canal excavation program. He recognized it as the first significant step by the City Corporation in supporting local efforts to restore the city's water channels. Dr. Shahadat remarked, “This initiative is a testament to the cooperation between the City Corporation and local communities. After a long time, Chattogram is fortunate to have a capable, skilled, and honest mayor who leads with integrity.” He urged the people of Chattogram to seize the opportunity for positive change.
Dr. Shahadat also addressed the historical context of Chattogram's canal system, pointing out that the city once had 71 crucial canals, but many of these waterways were filled in due to a combination of mismanagement and illegal activities. "The filling of these canals is a major cause of the city’s water-logging issues," he said. "Though the responsibility of excavating these canals lies with the City Corporation, some dishonest individuals have transferred this responsibility to the Chattogram Development Authority (CDA). While CDA has identified 57 canals for restoration, only 36 are currently being worked on.”
The canal excavation project was launched under the leadership of former Uttar Kattoli Ward BNP President Rafiq Uddin Chowdhury and General Secretary Faridul Alam, with special guests including Alhaj Ershad Ullah, Convener of Chattogram Metropolitan BNP, and former General Secretary Abul Hashem Bakkar. Their collective efforts demonstrate the strong community involvement in driving the restoration of Chattogram's waterways.
The canal excavation initiative in Chattogram highlights the power of local collaboration and BNP's long-standing commitment to urban development. By revitalizing the city's canals, BNP aims to create a cleaner, more sustainable urban environment for future generations. The hope is that this effort will not only address waterlogging issues but also foster economic growth and improve the quality of life for Chattogram's residents.
As the city continues to tackle urban challenges, the successful partnership between local political leaders, residents, and city authorities stands as an example of how grassroots initiatives can drive meaningful change.
