Labour and Employment Adviser Brigadier General (Retd) Dr M Sakhawat Hossain said that efforts are currently underway to improve the condition of workers.
“The interim government is working to ensure workers' rights. It's not that we’ve done a lot already. But the process we have been able to initiate will have a significant impact,” he said.
He made the remarks while attending a rally on the capital’s Manik Mia Avenue on Thursday morning, the occasion of ‘Great May Day’ and ‘National Occupational Health and Safety Day. '
Inaugurating the rally by releasing balloons and doves, the adviser said if owners and workers stand united, the face of society will change.
He also described Bangladesh’s current status with the International Labour Organization (ILO).
Sakhawat Hossain said upon visiting the ILO, it was found that over the past 20–30 years, workers’ wages and safety systems have become very fragile.
There was a real possibility of being banned if the situation had deteriorated just a bit further, he added.
