A Bangladeshi was shot dead by India's Border Security Force (BSF) at the Maheshpur border in Jhenaidah.
The incident occurred early this morning (April 27) at the Gopalpur border in Jadabpur Union.
The deceased has been identified as Md. Obaidul (23), son of Hanif Ali.
Locals reported that a group of 3-4 people crossed into India on Saturday night. BSF members from the Madhupur camp chased them, capturing Obaidul while the others escaped. Later, villagers saw a dead body lying near the border on the Indian side.
Village police officer Omar Ali said he heard gunshots from the other side around 1 am and went to Obaidul's house. Upon arrival, he found the family in distress, leading him to believe that Obaidul had been shot.
Jadabpur Union member Babul Hossain also confirmed hearing gunfire.
Since the incident, it has been reported that Obaidul from Gopalpur village is missing, and the dead body lying on the other side may be his.
BGB’s Jadabpur BOP commander, Havildar Mofizul Islam, said, "He heard reports from locals and is investigating the matter, but no formal complaint has been lodged yet."
Maheshpur 58 BGB Commander Lt. Colonel Rafiqul Alam said, "At 8:50 am this morning, the Battalion Commander of India's Madhupur BSF called and informed me that a body is lying 200 yards inside the Indian border. It is unclear whether the body belongs to a Bangladeshi or an Indian."
Maheshpur Police Station's Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Saiful Islam said that upon receiving information about a BSF shooting a person inside India, he informed the 58 BGB Commander over the phone.
