Investigation agency has submitted its first comprehensive report to the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), accusing eight individuals in connection with the Chankharpul Genocide that took place during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in the capital.
The report, filed today (April 21), marks the tribunal’s first full documentation of the July-August Genocide incidents.
Among those accused is former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman, who has been named the prime accused in the case. Also charged is Sudip Kumar Chakraborti, who served as the Joint Commissioner of DMP during that period.
The list of arrested individuals includes Inspector Arshad, Constable Md. Sujon, Constable Imaz Hossain Emon, and Constable Nasirul Islam.
Speaking at a press conference held at the Prosecutor’s Office, Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam confirmed the significance of the report.
"This is the first comprehensive report on the July-August Genocide," he said.
"The timeframe for the massacre has been determined to span from July 1 to August 5. During this period, several student protesters were martyred, including Shahriar Khan Anas, Sheikh Mahdi Hasan Junayed, Md. Yakub, Md. Rakib Hawlader, and Md. Islamul Haque Manik Mia. They were allegedly shot dead, according to the charges," he added.
