The BSF has handed over the body of Bangladeshi youth Hasibul Alam (25), who was killed in firing by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) at the Hatibandha border in Lalmonirhat.
The body was handed over after a BGB-BSF flag meeting at the Kharija Jongra border area of Patgram upazila around 11 pm on Thursday.
Commander of the Maheshmari camp of India's 157th BSF battalion Raj Kumar, OC of Shitalkuchi police station and Subedar Rezaul Islam, representative of the Kharija Jongra camp of Bangladesh's 61st BGB battalion, Sub-Inspector (SI) of Patgram police station Tajrul Islam, and the deceased youth's father Zahidul Islam and uncle Rashidul Islam were present at the time.
A heartbreaking scene was created when the body reached the village after the handover at night.
The deceased Hasibul Alam is the son of Moshale Uddin of Singimari area of Hatibandha upazila. Earlier in the evening, a flag meeting was held between the border guards of the two countries regarding this. Eyewitnesses and local sources said that on Wednesday afternoon, Hasibul Alam and some Bangladeshi nationals had gone to cut and collect grass inside Bangladesh near the 6S sub-pillar of the main pillar number 894 of the Hatibandha border. It has been alleged that at that time, BSF members of the Nagar Singimari camp of Shitalkuchi police station in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal state of India suddenly entered Bangladeshi territory, chased the Bangladeshis who were cutting grass and opened fire.
Hasibul was shot in this way and the BSF caught him and took him to India. Later, he died while undergoing treatment in a hospital in Cooch Behar district.
