The government has taken the initiative to launch government pharmacies in every government hospital premises in the country. Through this, the common people will be able to buy 250 types of medicines at one-third of the price.
The Ministry of Health said the government has taken this initiative to ensure quality and standard medicines for everyone at affordable prices.
On Tuesday, special assistant of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Professor Dr. Sayedur Rahman, confirmed the matter to the media.
Due to the huge pressure on the health sector and the high price of medicines, many patients are unable to afford medical expenses, due to which they are becoming economically weak. Health-related people see this government pharmacy system as a big step to overcome this situation.
In this regard, Professor Sayedur Rahman said, “This initiative of the government will be very beneficial for the common people. Our goal is to reduce the cost of medicines and make healthcare more accessible to the people. If government pharmacies are launched, it will be possible to treat 85 percent of patients through this, which would be a revolutionary step for the health sector.”
However, there is a challenge to prevent drug theft to make government pharmacies work properly, he said, adding that digital management will be introduced to address this.
Dr. Sayedur Rahman said, “Every year, the government pharmaceutical company EDCL buys about Tk 1300 crore of drugs and from now on, the budget will be increased to buy more drugs. By increasing the government's production capacity, it will be ensured that the necessary drugs can be supplied on time.”
