A Dhaka court on Wednesday placed retired judge AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik of the Appellate Division of Supreme Court on a two-day remand in a student murder case.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Monirul Islam passed the order as police produced him before the court and pleaded to place him on a seven-day remand.
Former judge Manik was produced in court this morning. The police then pleaded for a seven-day remand for the investigation of the case.
Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court argued for the remand on behalf of the state.
He said: “The accused is one of the associates of the fascist Sheikh Hasina. When he was fleeing the country after the fall of the government, the people stopped him.”
“He tried to leave the country in exchange for several lakhs of taka. It is unfortunate that those who were supposed to help him flee the country took that money and fled,” the PP continued.
“Manik was found in the forest wearing shorts and lying on a banana leaf. The investigation officer of the case has found primary evidence of his involvement in the investigation of the allegations. I expect his maximum remand.”
According to the case statement, Md Abu Jar Sheikh took part in the anti-discrimination students’ movement in the Pragati Swarini area under Gulshan Police Station on July 19.
