Bangladesh's largest political party, BNP has called for the elections to be held as soon as possible, once essential reforms are completed. The party has also suggested August 5 of this year as the date for the election to make the day memorable.
In response, Nahid Islam, the Information Adviser of the interim government, has shared his views on BNP's proposal.
Recently, Adviser Nahid gave an interview to an English daily in the country. When the topic was raised, he said, "August 5 will still be there in 2026 as a historic day. If we choose this date as a milestone for democratic progress, I see no issue with it."
The interview also touched upon the resignation of Nahid Islam and Asif Mahmud from the government and their involvement in a new political party.
Regarding the resignation, Nahid Islam stated, "As advisors, we are still focused on government work. The young people involved in forming a new party are discussing the party's matters. A decision regarding our resignation has not been made yet."
When asked whether he would take on the role of leader of the new party, the Information Adviser replied, "I haven't thought about it yet. I need to think more about where I can perform better or where my contribution would be most needed. I will evaluate whether it is better for me to stay in the government or be on the ground and make a decision accordingly."
