State Minister for Labour and Employment Md Nazrul Islam Chowdhury has called upon the Readymade Garment (RMG) owners to ensure pay wages and bonuses to their workers before the Eid vacation, to prevent the possible protests on the streets, Daily Sun reported.
“I have instructed garment owners to pay wages and bonuses to their workers before Eid-ul-Fitr, at any cost, to prevent the possible unrest on the streets during the Eid journey,” he said on Wednesday.
While talking to the reporters at his ministry office in Dhaka, the junior minister said that he gave the instruction during a meeting with both the RMG owners and representatives of the workers.
The unrest among RMG workers before Eid vacations is a recurring issue in the country, as the sector, being one of the highest foreign currency earners, often leaves its workers unpaid before the Eid holiday, compelling them to resort to street protests to meet their demands.
Consequently, the holidaymakers have to face huge traffic congestion on almost all exit routes and the law and order on the streets become dysfunctional during the Eid rush.
Citing the fact, Nazrul Islam said, “We don’t want to see any disorder or vandalism on the streets during the Eid journey.”
