Bashundhara Foundation distributed interest-free loan among 299 insolvent and distressed people in Brahmanbaria and Cumilla on Monday.
The non-profit and social development venture of the Bashundhara Group came up with the loan distribution at a programme at Haripur village in Homna municipality of Cumilla.
Distressed people from 11 villages of Homna upazila under Cumilla and one village of Nabinagar upazila under Brahmanbaria received the loans, reports Daily Sun.
Of the loanees, 205 persons received Tk 15,000 each talking a total of Tk 30.75 lakh as first installment while 94 persons got Tk 15,000 each aggregating Tk 14.10 lakh as second.
Small traders, farmers, village doctors and other professionals received a total of Tk 44.85 lakh which is without interest and security charge.
Noted litterateur Imdadul Haq Milan, Editor-in-Chief of the Kaler Kantho, attended the loan disbursement programme as the chief guest while East West Media Group Ltd Publisher Maynal Hossain Chowdhury presided over it.
Speaking on the programme, Imdadul Haq Milan said Bashundhara Group has set a rare example of humanity by distributing interest-free loan among the poor and helpless people.
Bashundhara Foundation is going to be a role model for bringing smile to the untra-poor and small traders through charge-free loans, he added.
Homna municipality mayor Nazrul Islam, Bashundhara Foundation DGM Md Maymun Kabir, Shuvosangho director Zakaria Zaman, among others, were present.
