Bashundhara Eye Hospital and Research Institute (BEHRI) conducted cost-free eye surgeries of 39 poor patients on Thursday.
BEHRI, an ophthalmic venture of the Bashundhara Group, in collaboration with Vision Care Foundation and AKM Abu Taher Foundation arranged the operations.
Under supervision of BEHRI director Prof Dr Md Saleh Ahmed, Dr Rubina Akter, Dr Mozumder Golam Rabbi and Dr Tasruba Shahnaz conducted the surgeries at the hospital located in Bashundhara Residential Area in the capital Dhaka.
Of the operated patients, 23 are male and 16 female—all hailing from Cumilla.
Talking to press, Prof Dr Md Saleh Ahmed said “We arrange eye camp twice a month to provide insolvent and helpless people with cost-free treatments and power glasses.”
About surgery, he said a day-long camp was held at Haripur Aganagar High School in Barura upazila of Cumilla on July 10 treating 1,600 patients and selecting 341 for operations. The 39 patients, who received operation on Thursday, belong to the group of 341.
Faiza Rahman, public relations officer of BEHRI, said the cost-free operations are meant for preventing blindness of poor and destitute who cannot afford treatment.
A total of 2,645 people have received free of charge operations from the Bashundhara Eye Hospital and Research Institute so far, she added.
