The Embassy of the European Union (EU) in Dhaka has said that World Humanitarian Day is a reminder that EU humanitarian aid exists so that people in need are not forgotten, reports UNB.
“This in particular applies to Bangladesh and the EU's Rohingya response entering its 6th year,” the EU embassy in Dhaka tweeted, marking the day that falls on Saturday.
Bangladesh is hosting over 1.1 million Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazar and Bhasan Char.
European Union’s Special Representative for Human Rights Eamon Gilmore, who visited Bangladesh recently, said they will talk to other countries about what more needs to be done to resolve the Rohingya crisis, and they are particularly aware of the reductions in food rations that are being made this year.
This year’s World Humanitarian Day marks the 20th anniversary of the deadly attack on the Canal Hotel in Baghdad.
“On this World Humanitarian Day, we salute the courage and dedication of humanitarian aid workers everywhere. We reaffirm our full support for their determined and life-saving efforts across the world. We celebrate their unwavering dedication to serve ALL people in need: No matter who, no matter where; no matter what,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a message marking the day.
