I am Sabnoor, a second year MBBS student of Patuakhali Medical College. My aim in life is to become a good physician although two years ago my future was uncertain.
In fact, we have accompanied uncertainty since childhood. My house is in Kamarkathi village of Swarupkathi upazila of Pirojpur. My family consists of parents and two younger siblings.
My father was a raw material trader. Our days were going well. But life turned dark when I was a student class five. My father suffered a stroke and became bedridden. When the breadwinner in a family is not healthy, no one in the family can lead a normal life.
My mother had to meet needs of the family, including father's treatment and study of children. Apart from nursing husband, she started working as housemaid to earn money. With the low income, my mother had to struggle a lot.
Under such a situation, it was not possible for my mother to bear my educational costs. When I was the student of class six in Kamarkathi Secondary School, my teachers decided to teach me without money evaluating good results. Ultimately, the teachers provided me with books and cost-free tuition. In the JSC exam, I obtained Golden GPA-5.
After results, everyone suggested me to study science. I also dreamt of becoming a doctor. I chose science at class nine and got Golden GPA-5 in my SSC examinations. It was time for college enrollment.
I got admitted to Shahid Smriti Degree College in Swarupkathi. Some of my teachers helped me in getting admission and purchasing books. Meanwhile, my father suffered a stroke for the second time. He had already been suffering from asthma. The overall condition of my father was very bad.
None of my relatives was highly affluent to help us. However, I got Golden GPA-5 in the HSC examinations despite all hurdles. In such a situation, I was bent on medical study. Later, admission battle started and I came out winner.
I got chance in a public medical college. But the cost of admission and purchase of books was so high. I could not see any hope to study medical science. At one stage, I abandoned the idea of medical study.
My family did not afford our meals thrice a day let alone facilitating my MBBS study.
Bashundhara Group stood by me at a time when I gave up hope. Kaler Kantho Editor-in-Chief Imdadul Haq Milan inquired about my family through Shuvosangho.
They brought me to Dhaka with my parents and gave me money for admission to medical college and buy books. Expenses of our travel were also borne by Bashundhara Shuvosangho. I got admitted without hesitation. Bashundhara Group has been giving me a stipend worth Tk 10,000 per month since admission. Alongside continuing study, I can extend financial support to the family as regards medicines of father and other household needs. None of my family is now starving. Bashundhara Group has materialised dream of a family to survive. We are ever grateful to the industrial conglomerate for their social initiative. Please, pray for me so that I can become a humanitarian physician and work for country and its people in line with Bashundhara Group.
