Iranian forces are confiscating Starlink dishes in Tehran amid a total internet blockade in the country.
“It’s electronic warfare,” Amir Rashidi, director of digital rights and security at the US-based Miaan Group, told The Wall Street Journal.
Some Iranians have been using Elon Musk’s Starlink service to communicate with the outside world. Mehdi Yahyanejad, cofounder at NetFreedom Pioneers, told the newspaper the crackdown has slowed people from using Starlink but not entirely halted the effort.
Starlink terminals began showing up in Iran during the last significant demonstrations in 2022, the Journal reported.
Iran’s internet has now been cut for five days for its 90 million people to control violent demonstrations, authorities say. Some international phone services began sporadically working again earlier on Tuesday.
