The US has urged its citizens to leave Iran ‘immediately’. The country’s virtual embassy issued the directions on Monday local time, saying that the ongoing protests across Iran are rapidly escalating and could turn violent.
It said that the protests in Iran are escalating day by day and could turn violent. As a result, many people have been arrested, injured – with roadblocks, public transport shutdowns and internet outages disrupting daily life.
Due to the ongoing crisis, many airlines have canceled or suspended flights to Iran until at least January 16. The US has urged it’s citizens to leave by land to Armenia or Turkey.
In the instructions, the country said, “Be prepared for internet outages in Iran. Ensure alternative means of communication and travel by land to Armenia or Turkey. Leave Iran right now.”
The US has also urged people in Iran not to have any plans that require them to rely on US government assistance.
The US embassy has advised those who cannot leave Iran to move to a safe place and stock up on food. If you cannot leave Iran, they said, find safe shelter in your residence or another building. Stock up on food, water, medicine and other essentials.
US citizens have also been urged not to travel to areas where protests are taking place.
