US President Donald Trump has reportedly given Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky just "days" to respond to a peace proposal that demands Ukraine make territorial concessions to Russia in exchange for unspecified security guarantees, according to Financial Times sources.
One official told the newspaper that Trump hopes to reach an agreement by Christmas. However, Zelensky has asked for more time to consult with Ukraine’s European allies before making a decision.
Trump initially hoped for a deal by Thanksgiving but later told journalists there was no specific timeline for reaching an agreement.
The US peace plan, presented in November, reportedly calls for Ukraine to withdraw its troops from parts of the Donbass region, which are currently under Ukrainian control. This is a key demand from Russia for any ceasefire to take hold.
Zelensky acknowledged during his trip to London on Monday that the US is pushing Ukraine toward a "compromise" but emphasized that no agreement on territorial concessions has been reached. He reaffirmed Ukraine’s position, stating the country would not give up any land without a fight.
Meanwhile, Russian forces continue to make gains on various fronts, while Ukrainian commanders report being outgunned and struggling to replenish losses with new conscripts. In early December, the Russian Defense Ministry announced the capture of Krasnoarmeysk (Pokrovsk), a Donbass city that President Vladimir Putin has described as a critical "bridgehead" for further offensives.
The ongoing conflict continues to create significant pressure for a resolution, but key disagreements over territory remain a major hurdle.
