A tsunami of up to three metres (10 feet) was expected to hit Japan's Pacific coast, the country's meteorological agency said Monday, after a 7.6-magnitude quake struck, AFP reports.
The initial wave was estimated to arrive by 11:40pm (1440 GMT) in port areas spanning the northern regions of Aomori to Iwate, according to public broadcaster NHK.
The earthquake, which occurred at 11:15 pm local time, was felt across broad areas of northern and eastern Japan. JMA reported that the epicentre was roughly 80 km (50 miles) offshore from Aomori and about 50 km (30 miles) deep.
