At least four people died and five others were injured after an explosion at a firecracker factory in Chinnakamanpatti near Tamil Nadu's Sivakasi, renowned as India's fireworks hub, on Monday.
The injured were rushed to the Virudhunagar Government Hospital for treatment, where they are currently undergoing medical care, reports Hindustan Times.
"Four people died and five others were injured in an explosion at a firecracker factory in Chinnakamanpatti near Sivakasi. They were admitted to the Virudhunagar government hospital for treatment. More details awaited," Virudhunagar District SP Kannan told news agency ANI.
The blast triggered a large fire, and thick smoke was seen rising from the factory as firecrackers continued to burst inside.
Earlier on the day, another blast incident took place at a pharmaceuticals factory in the southern Indian state of Telangana, which killed at least 42 people, leaving several injured and in critical condition.
Describing the aftermath to the media, eyewitnesses said the blast's impact was so powerful that “workers were tossed into the air and thrown several metres away.”
