At least 38 people lost their lives and 63 others sustained injuries in rain-related incidents across the country during three days of intense monsoon showers, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) of Pakistan said on Sunday, Saama TV reported.
According to the NDMA, the highest number of casualties was reported from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), where 19 people died in various incidents triggered by heavy rainfall. In Punjab, 12 people were reported dead, while seven fatalities were recorded in Sindh and Balochistan combined.
The torrential rains, which lashed various parts of the country from June 26 to 28, have also led to damage to infrastructure and disruption in mobility in low-lying and vulnerable areas.
Authorities have warned that monsoon activity is likely to persist in several regions on Sunday, with intermittent rain expected in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the plains of Punjab, and parts of Sindh. The Meteorological Department has also predicted rainfall in Balochistan.
In a another development, the NDMA has issued a flash flood warning for Swat and surrounding districts amid fears of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) in Gilgit-Baltistan.
The alert follows increased water levels due to glacial melting, which can cause sudden flooding in downstream areas.
Meanwhile, rescue and relief operations are underway in the affected areas, and provincial disaster management authorities have been directed to remain on high alert.
