President Donald Trump will announce within the next two weeks whether the United States will intervene in the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, the White House said Thursday.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, reading a prepared statement from the president, acknowledged speculation over possible direct U.S. involvement.
“Given the possibility—though not certainty—of negotiations with Iran in the near future, I will make my decision on whether or not to intervene within the next two weeks,” Trump said.
Leavitt did not clarify what led Trump to believe talks with Iran might occur. On Wednesday, Trump claimed Iran had offered to send officials to Washington to negotiate over its nuclear program and the ongoing conflict with Israel—an assertion Iran has denied.
Pressed about reports that Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, had been in contact with Iran’s foreign minister, Leavitt said “correspondence has continued” between the two countries but added she was “not tracking” any plans for Witkoff to travel to Geneva for talks.
Trump held his third national security meeting in as many days on Thursday in the White House’s Situation Room, as he continued to weigh the prospect of joining Israel’s bombing campaign.
Asked Wednesday whether he was leaning toward military action, Trump said simply, “I may do it, I may not do it.”
