Just days after a fatal Dreamliner crash in Ahmedabad, another Air India Boeing 787-8 flight was forced to turn back to Hong Kong mid-air due to a suspected technical glitch.
An Air India flight bound for Delhi from Hong Kong was forced to turn back mid-air after the pilot reported a suspected technical glitch.
Flight AI315, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, departed from Hong Kong on Monday morning and was en route to Delhi when the issue was detected, sources told India Today TV. Acting on standard safety protocol, the pilot decided to return to the point of origin.
Details of the suspected technical fault are yet to be officially confirmed. The aircraft landed safely back in Hong Kong, and there were no immediate reports of injuries.
All passengers and crew members were evacuated safely from the affected aircraft.
Data from online tracker Flightradar24 showed that the passenger jet returned to the Hong Kong airport within 90 minutes after taking off.
Air India has not issued a public statement yet regarding the nature of the technical problem or the rescheduling of the flight.
The recent technical glitch came days after a tragic crash involving the same aircraft model. An Air India 787-8 Dreamliner en route to London from Ahmedabad crashed shortly after take-off, killing 270 people, including 241 on board. 29 others on the ground, including five MBBS students, were among 279 killed due to the mishap.
The aircraft reportedly plunged into the campus of a medical college in the Meghaninagar area and burst into flames minutes after departing from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.
The crash triggered a massive blaze, reducing the aircraft to wreckage. On board were 230 passengers, two pilots, and ten crew members. Miraculously, a British national of Indian origin survived and is currently undergoing treatment.
