Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the ongoing tensions between Israel and Iran, as well as efforts toward a settlement in Ukraine, during a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump, the Kremlin said on Saturday.
This marked the fifth phone conversation between the two leaders amid efforts to reset U.S.-Russia relations—signaling a sharp departure from the policies of Trump’s predecessor, Joe Biden.
“The dangerous escalation in the Middle East was of course at the centre of the exchange,” the Kremlin said, referring to Israel’s bombing of Iran on Friday, which triggered retaliatory strikes by Iran.
According to the Kremlin, President Putin said that Moscow is prepared to act as a mediator between Israel and Iran.
Both leaders reportedly expressed concern over the escalating tensions in the region, though neither ruled out the possibility of returning to negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme.
The statement also noted that Putin briefed Trump on the “implementation of the agreements reached at the meeting between the Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Istanbul on June 2.”
Putin told Trump that Russia is ready to resume talks with Ukraine after June 22. Trump, in response, acknowledged the update and reiterated his interest in a swift resolution to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
Additionally, Putin congratulated Trump on his birthday, and both leaders reflected on the “brotherhood in arms” shared by the United States and Russia during World War II.
