Turkey will export 48 of its domestically developed KAAN fighter jets to Indonesia, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced on Wednesday. The multibillion-dollar agreement marks the first international sale of Turkey’s fifth-generation combat aircraft and signals deepening military ties between the two nations, reports AP.
The announcement was made during the Indo Defence 2025 exposition in Jakarta, where Indonesia’s Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin and Turkish Defense Industry Secretary Haluk Görgün signed the deal. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, who has prioritized military modernization, also witnessed the signing.
President Erdoğan shared the news via social media, stating that the aircraft would be manufactured in Turkey, with integration of Indonesia’s local capabilities. While no official financial details were disclosed, local media estimated the deal at around $10 billion.
“This agreement showcases the progress of our domestic and national defense industry,” Erdoğan said, crediting President Subianto’s leadership in securing the collaboration.
The KAAN fighter jet successfully completed its maiden flight in 2024. Developed as Turkey’s first indigenous fifth-generation fighter, it features stealth capabilities, advanced radar systems, and high maneuverability. The first operational units are expected to be delivered to the Turkish Air Force in 2028.
Indonesia’s purchase is part of a broader push to modernize its military arsenal, which includes outdated aircraft from the U.S., Russia, and Britain. Subianto emphasized the importance of military investment during his speech at the exhibition: “A nation that does not invest in defense will lose its independence.”
Turkey and Indonesia have recently expanded their cooperation in defense technology. Earlier this year, the two countries agreed to jointly develop a Baykar drone production facility in Indonesia. Other nations, including Pakistan and Azerbaijan, have also expressed interest in acquiring the KAAN jet.
The export deal not only boosts Turkey’s growing defense sector but also strengthens strategic ties with Indonesia as both nations seek to enhance their regional security capabilities.
