Following the deadly attack in Pahalgam on April 22 that claimed 26 lives, India launched a series of missile strikes under a newly named offensive, “Operation Sindoor.”
Indian officials claimed that the strikes targeted nine terror hubs in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir, reports Hindustan Times.
Officials said Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally decided to name the operation "Operation Sindoor" to humanise the tragedy and honour the grief of families torn apart by the Pahalgam attack.
“Sindoor” refers to the red vermilion worn by Hindu married women. The name was reportedly inspired by the heart-wrenching image of Himanshi Narwal, a newlywed seen grieving beside the body of her husband, naval officer Vinay Narwal, who was killed in the attack just days after their wedding. The image circulated widely on social media, striking a national chord, added Hindustan Times.
Commenting on the retaliatory strikes, the Indian Army posted on social media platform X: “Justice is Served.”
