UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed deep concern over the rising military tensions between India and Pakistan, following reports of Indian strikes across the Line of Control and the international border.
In a statement issued Tuesday by his spokesperson, Guterres urged both nations to exercise restraint. “The world cannot afford a military confrontation between India and Pakistan,” the note warned, highlighting the risks posed by the escalating crisis.
On Monday, the Secretary-General had described the situation as the “highest in years” in terms of regional tension, and reiterated that “a military solution is no solution.” He also extended his good offices to both governments to help ease tensions and promote diplomatic dialogue.
Guterres further condemned the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, where at least 26 civilians were killed and many injured. “Targeting civilians is unacceptable,” he said, adding that those responsible must be brought to justice through credible and lawful means.
The UN's call for calm comes amid growing international concern over stability in South Asia, as the region witnesses one of its most dangerous escalations in recent years.
