Twenty-six civilians were killed in a terror attack in Indian-administered Jammu & Kashmir's Anantnag district on Tuesday.
The attack took place at Baisaran, a meadow accessible only by foot or ponies, where a group of tourists had gone visiting this morning. The number of deaths are still being ascertained, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said, as he described the terror attack as "much larger than anything we've seen directed at civilians in recent years".
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephonic conversation with Union Home Minister Amti Shah and asked him to take "suitable measures". Mr Shah, the sources said, has left for Srinagar to take stock of the situation. He will hold an urgent security review meeting with all the agencies.
Indian Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra denounced the Kashmir terror attack, calling it a highly condemnable and shameful act.
"Targeting unarmed and innocent civilians is a crime against humanity. This is completely unacceptable. The whole country stands united against terrorism and strongly condemns it," she said in a post on X in Hindi.
"According to reports, many tourists have been killed in this attack. May God grant peace to the departed souls. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured," she said.
