The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party and the sisters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan have filed a contempt petition against Adiala Jail authorities, accusing them of denying meetings with the PTI leader despite court orders. The petition, filed at the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Friday, was supported by Imran Khan's sisters, Aleema and Uzma, and senior PTI leaders including Omar Ayub, Shibli Faraz, and Aliya Hamza, reads a DAWN report.
Aleema Khan, through her lawyer Advocate Ali Bukhari, emphasized in the petition that the repeated denial of access to Imran Khan by jail officials was a clear violation of the IHC’s instructions. Last month, the court had ordered that Khan be allowed to meet his family, lawyers, and select party members twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Despite this, the petition alleges that Adiala Jail authorities have consistently obstructed these visits.
Aleema Khan criticized the authorities for preventing legal consultations, particularly stressing that these meetings were crucial for the PTI founder's ongoing legal cases. She voiced concerns that such actions were aimed at sabotaging the legal process and undermining Khan's constitutional rights. “The court’s order is being blatantly ignored,” she said, adding that her family and legal team had been repeatedly barred from meeting Khan.
Further, PTI leader Omar Ayub also addressed the media, highlighting that PTI leaders had been unable to meet Khan for over three months, which he described as a violation of the constitutional rights of political leaders and citizens. Ayub accused law enforcement authorities of deliberately disrupting the legal process, asserting that such actions were part of a broader effort to undermine democratic principles in Pakistan.
The contempt petition seeks immediate judicial action to enforce the IHC’s orders and ensure that Imran Khan’s legal rights are protected. The IHC will now consider the petition and decide on further action against the jail authorities.
